Sight, smell, touch, and of course, taste: the senses that form the foundations of baking, a creative process that demands an all-encompassed focus. It is this synthesis of sensual expression that drives Julia Duke, owner/baker of Sea Biscuit Bakery, toward pastry. Originally torn between various artistic outlets, she finally realized their fusion in the culinary realm and never looked back.
Creativity aside, her favorite aspect of baking is social, how it brings people together. The kitchen was the focal point of Julia's childhood home, where she was ingrained with her mom's powers to delight, inspire, and start parties with the right ingredients and a flick of her wrists.
From her dorm kitchens at school in the mountains of Tennessee to Le Cordon Bleu classrooms in Paris; from Flour Bakery of Boston to restaurants Rye and Bluestem of her native Kansas City, Julia has baked and learned voraciously. However, it wasn't until a whirlwind roadtrip, driven by chance and adventure, that Julia found what proved to be the most formative of pastry experiences in Rockport, as pastry chef of Salt Water Farm. Things were winding down after a busy summer when she happily stumbled upon her better half, Rockport native Mack Duke.
Together, Mack and Julia have started Sea Biscuit Bakery, and are excited to share their dedication to deliciousness and fun with the local community!
